[ale] measuring bandwidth

Hey all,

I need to measure some bandwidth on a bunch of linux servers. At first we
took a snapshot of the ifconfig output at the beginning and end of the day.
The intent was to compare the differences. Apparently there were some is
some sort of cycle or reset in the data that causes it to be inaccurate for
this purpose. The value at the end of the day ended up being less than the
start of the day.

It appears this method is invalid at least on the redhat 5 distro in use..
Any ideas on other ways to collect this data?
