[ale] One home directory

Here's what works for me.

I keep the majority of my data on an NFS server that gets accessed by
various other boxen. Each user's UID is kept consistent, so standard
Unix permissions apply across platforms.

Files that are needed remotely are kept in my Dropbox directory, which
is present on both my laptop, and filer. A cron job rsyncs a directory
of commonly used ISOs and related larger files between the laptop and
filer. If I'm on the road, and need something that's not in either of
those two, I VPN or ssh into the filer.

This way all backups are done based on what resides on the filer. If
something happens to my laptop, I'm out some money to replace it, but
have not lost any data that can't be easily regenerated.
