[ale] installing Ubuntu on a Windows system

I used a Gparted live CD to resize a Windows NTFS partition once.
Windows automatically ran chkdsk after the resize and reboot.

How does he insure that the windisease and manufacturer "recovery"
schemes don't destroy his new partition and boot configurations?
That stuff has bitten me whenever I've tried to keep the windisease
colony as boot option instead of just fsck-ing it, though I'll admit
that this has only been twice. :-)
