[ale] Reading old XDF formatted floppies

I'm wondering if anyone here knows how to read an old XDF-formatted
floppy disk---without an internal floppy disk attached to a standard
floppy disk controller.  All I have available is a USB floppy drive.
xdfcopy won't do it, and the floppy drive thinks that everything 

I pretty much think I'm screwed, but here's hoping...
