More and more, this is simply not true.  Linux is starting to have
enough presence in the market that manufacturers are starting to
figure out ways to get supported drivers in linux.

Here is one collection of hardware specs.

Additionally, Intel has staff that support their drivers in Linux.

Marvell has hired consultants to provide drivers for their latest sata
controllers.

Others provide Linux developers with documentation under NDA.

I don't think it is a pessimistic as the "leper colony" comment makes it sound.
