I have 3 days worth of experience and data that says otherwise.

The Intel provided firmware *does* work, the packaging and
distribution of that firmware, libs, and xorg.conf is what is a big
mess.  Do you blame Intel for that or Ubuntu?  To make the driver work
you need one package from a Jaunty PPA, and libs from a Karmic PPA,
and then xorg.conf advice from just one of 40+ Ubuntu wiki pages with
non-proper advice.   It is a packaging and distribution mess, not a
technological problem.
