[ale] [OT] DSL and latency

Chris:

After watching the video on testing the phone line, I arrived at the
friend's house with laptop and screwdriver. Plugging the modem into the
test jack, in place of the line that was there, I got no DSL light at
all. Plugging a standard phone there, I got no dialtone! Same for the
other (unused) line in the same box. Also, with the test jack empty,
the inside phones worked as usual.

If I had some test clips and a bare phone cord, I could have tapped the
line, but it seems that the inside wiring would still be live, so would
that have been a useful test?

We called AT&T and they've agreed to send someone out Monday, but
wouldn't commit to any latency test. They couldn't explain why the test
jack failed to work as expected, either.

Another perfectly fine afternoon spent trying to decide if wiring or
AT&T or Earthlink is the problem...
