I bought a Batteries Plus battery for my APC only to find it doesn't fit
due to the way the original battery of the same size was made.

I often get old APC UPS's that 'don't work' given to me. The most
common problem is that the SLA battery
in the unit is dead and needs to be replaced. Many APC units have a
trapdoor in the bottom that makes this change trivial to accomplish...
and the batteries are available locally at any Batteries Plus for ~$25
(if you have a commerical account with them, the price gets lower)...
So you might poke around for bargain units on craigslist or such prior
to paying full tariff.... or scavange at one of the recyclers...
