I've bought my share of expensive business grade laptops. My personal
favorite was my decked out Fujitsu P2120. That was by far the most I've
ever paid for a laptop per pound :).

A big plus that I've noticed since running the cheaper Dell laptops,
Inspirons in this case, is that fresh replacement parts are cheap and
abundant on ebay. Every "nice" laptop I've ever owned had rare and
expensive replacement parts.

I agree with you that I also want my laptop to stay operational. I
don't know that I'd feel much safer with a more expensive laptop. In my
personal experience, the most likely part to fail in any computer is the
hard drives. I don't expect the pricier machines to have drives that
are less likely to fail :).
