Happy New Year, all!

I have been trying to find the correct set of options to take DVD
video and convert it to a format an iPod will play.  The one video
that I
have on the iPod now has a suffix of m4v, but that has not appeared to
be definitive enough to help me.  If anyone has pointers
to a set of tools for doing this under Fedora 8, I would be very appreciative
