I seem to recall that Amtrak had (maybe still does) cross country trains
where you'd ride the train and ship your car to use at destination on
same train.

Wow, probably ridiculously expensive, but you could sure get a lot of 
media attention for the group with something like this!
Tech writers, environmental and travel writers would jump all over this.
