[ale] Question about cable modem connections

I use cable modem (bought my own even to avoid the lousy $3/month
rental). They did require it to be hooked to a Windoze PC and at that
point I was still using IE so I don't know if it was restricted to IE or
not.

I do know that the MAC of the initial PC is not an issue. The PC I
used when I initially hooked up has since been replaced with one laptop
and then another with no issues. Also in that time I've hooked up two
different brands of wireless router. As someone else said you can
force a new IP via DHCP from the provider usually by powering off the
cable modem for 2 minutes. I don't think the modem itself provides DHCP
but most home routers do so you may be thinking you're getting it from
modem when in fact you're getting it from your own router.

you don't have to clone the mac of the computer... just unplug the modem
for about 10 seconds, plug it into the router, and go from there

overall it took me about 3 full rboot cycles on the modem and router for
them to sync up, but that was pretty painless

I'm not sure that really solves the problem that Jim brings up. As I
recall, cable modems traditionally grab the MAC address of the first PC
which connects to it, and from then on ONLY that MAC address is
accepted, which is why the router would need to clone the MAC address of
that computer. However, I also think that I've had no problems
connecting other PC's directly to the modem, so Comcast may have changed
their ways.

I have Comcast, so I will take a few minutes for an experiment. I'll
take apart the network and connect my Linux desktop to the modem, see
what happens, and report back. Of course, whatever happens with my set
up may not represent what will happen with hers, but it might give an
indication.

You could preconfigure the router at your house, then send it
with her. Restarting the router forces it to regrab the IP address of
the device it's connected to (at least on the ones I've used).

I'd never be able to get her to install and configure a router.
Surely
I can just furnish her with the mac address if the ethernet card
in the
laptop, can't I? I don't think there will ever be a time that
more than
that one computer is connected in that home, unless I'm there.

	Thanks,

	Jim.
