Nick,

Samba is used to replace the domain controller. It also comes with client software to allow you to mount CIFS shares. It unfortunately doesn't come with software that allows a Linux client to participate in a Windows domain just like a Windows box does (authentication/authorization and automatic mounting of your home directory).
