We use Nagios for monitoring all of our hosts (UNIX, Linux & Windoze) as
well as for additional equipment such as air handler and building UPS in
our data center.   It has a lot of prebuilt monitors you can get going
quickly and you can create customized ones fairly easily with shell
scripts, perl or C.

Being an old CLI kind of guy not having a GUI or Web Interface to
configure was never an issue to me.  Of course it DOES have a web
display so you can quickly see status of servers or services.

P.S.  For Nagios you need to get NRPE plugin for your UNIX/Linux hosts
and NSCLIENT for your Windows hosts.
