[ale] power supply question

I just got my new power supply, and I'm not sure if I got the right one. It 
says 20+4 pin ATX12V Main power connector. My old connector was 20 pins. Can 
I actually separate those last 4 pins and plug it in to my 20-pin slot????
I really don't want to smoke my motherboard..
It would mean using cutters to plsit that 24 pin connector.
