Mike,
James probably nailed the problem with the nvidia suggestion.  If you upgraded and had not used a rpm of the nvidia driver then this is definitely a problem.

You can totally fix this by adding the correct nvidia repository to Yast2.  An example of how to tweak opensuse is below.

The 10.1 nvidia repository is the ftp://download.nvidia.com/novell/  which will add an nvidia rpm for the kernel version used in novell's enterprise suse 10 and opensuse 10.1.  I prefer this method if your not changing kernels.  All kernel security updates won't break the nvidia kernel module when this method is used.  I just installed 10.2 on my laptop and so far am enjoying it.  Seems to run as well or better than 10.1.
