So don't use sudo, it's only there to protect novices.  Advanced users
can ignore it and su - root.  

Do the following one time after you login as <userid>:

 $ sudo passwd
 Password:		    <--- enter your userid password
 Enter new UNIX password:   <--- enter your new root password
 Retype new UNIX password:  <--- repeat new root password

Piece of cake.
