when I started up the cups server config I got this error box:
Some options were not recognized by this configuration tool. They will be left 
untouched and you won't be able to change them.

so I went into the web interface
 http://localhost:631
and went to config and selected the DEFAULT CONFIG at the bottom. voila, it 
started printing again.
whatever I had changed in that cupsd.conf file screwed it up and no matter how 
many times I add/removed printers, nothing happened...
I had even copied the cupsd.conf.default back to cupsd.conf, but either that 
didn't work correctly, OR I still had that interface open, which overwrote 
it....
not sure, but at least it is back to PRINTING!
oh, I got out THE MANUAL:) for my Epson 880. purchased April, 2001.
