Not the problem. RedHat/Fedora has mysql as the client side. Need to do
a 
yum install mysql-server 
and then 
/etc/init.d/mysqld start

to keep it running after a reboot:
/sbin/chkconfig --level 345 mysqld on

The chkconfig will setup all the required symlinks in the different
runlevels.

(as root, of course)
