I remember watching black and white reruns of the old Ernie Kovacs Show
with Imogene Coca.  (She later played Aunt Edna in National Lampoon's
Vacation).   Funny stuff but that wasn't "The Tonight Show".   I hadn't
been aware he'd ever been on that but found you're correct he was for a
short time:

Allen was the original host.  The show skipped around with hosts and
format (including most notably Ernie Kovacs, whose inclinations and
creativity were such that network television, quite frankly, couldn't
hold him) until 1957, when Jack Parr became the host.  Johnny Carson
became host in 1962.
