...all of which will likely break with the upgrade (or break the
upgrade..) and are provided through third-party repositories (eg livna)
for easy installation.

That said, the machine I'm typing this from has gone from RH7.3 all the 
way to FC3 via the 'inline upgrade' method.   It takes a lot of 
hand-holding along the way.
