[ale] ASUS P5MT question

How do I get the kernel debugging to kick in?  I've crashed again but with the difference that the kernel is crashed and sshd will accept the initial connection, but not get past the password prompt.  I haven't used the console just ssh connections since last night.  It is interesting since this is slightly different behavior than I've seen before.  I can ping the machine just fine.  I can ssh to it but not complete to a shell prompt.  This is typical of a kernel crash but the routing state is left intact.
