[ale] Evolution anomaly -> newsgroup postings disappear, HUH ?

Evolution-2.4.2.1		

Twice this morn, once as root and once as a normal user, I created a NEW 
news account in newly installed Evolution, subscribed to a few 
newsgroups [as a test], which I then initialized with former group 
postings from the news server.

I subsequently clicked on "retrieve new messages" and the original 
initializing messages had disapppeared [thousands of 'em] and only the 
newly posted were then present.

What's goin' on here, please ?
