Archive your .mozilla directory, let me say that again...

ARCHIVE YOUR .mozilla DIRECTORY...

then remove the mail database files under the Mail directory.  On 
thunderbird, they are the .msf files, I don't know if they're the same 
on .mozilla.  Each mail file will have an associated reference file.

Once you do that open mozilla again and see if you still have the problem.
