There seem to be quite a large number of USB enclosures with really
awful chipsets that don't quite meet the usb-mass-storage specifications.

My girlfriend has a really crappy enclosure, craptactular enough that it
uses an oddball cable with 2 host ends (good way to fry USB ports :p).
I had to tweak a usb header file in the kernel that contains workarounds
for different mass-storage chipsets.  There are A LOT of chipsets in
there that need workarounds.
