I have been using an external USB drive for backup for at least the
past nine months or so and have found the solution works very well
on FC3 using an ext3 file system.

The one potential "gotcha" is properly unmounting the drive before
disconnecting it or switching off the power. Failure to verify that
the drive is unmounted can (and often will) lead to a corrupted file
system on the drive. I always check the drive's mount status before
unplugging it. The problem is that various utilities that _should_
unmount the drive when the window is closed are not 100% reliable.
