I have been using a 1500 for a while now. It works great with apcupsd.
gapcmon is the gui.
http://gapcmon.sourceforge.net/
You will have to make sure that you get the config files for apcupsd setup
correctly.
be sure and set:
UPSCABLE usb
and
UPSTYPE usb
DEVICE # this is blank
