for one thing, GRUB cares about /boot and usually it is easier to have /boot
(128M required)  than to have / under 1024 cylinder.
could you please

   - elaborate on history of your 'rebuilding' on why & how?
   - make sure you have good backup of the system, before you attempt to
   manipulate partition table.
   - paste your current partition table (fdisk -l /dev/hda)?
