Hi Phil,
How long have you been running this installation of Ubuntu? I am
wondering if you have had time to collect so many cookies and cache
entries that you are getting bogged down. Do you have other browsers
installed? Opera is my current favorite on OSX and Ubuntu. Install
or boot a new browser and see if that changes anything.
If this is a fresh install, what is the hardware under it and what
are you comparing it too. That is, was windows installed on this
machine and you had much faster browsing or does the windows machine
you are forced to use at work run faster?
I did tweek some settings one time in Mozilla on a Mandriva
installation. I'd have to look up what I did. I may have found it
on Ubuntu's help pages but it was sort of like tweeking windows
registry entries.
My experience as a whole has been that all else being equal, if the
browser is really slow it is waiting on something. Maybe java is not
installed right, maybe dns resolution is not being handled well. Add
your isp's DNS or a few public ones to /etc/resolv.conf manually. I
remember someone posting some public DNS locations on the Linspire
browsing thread recently.
Please, no offense meant but If this was a system that I had manually
compiled the kernel on and screwed the rest together on my own I
would look at something I may have left out accidentally. I know you
compile the kernel to enhance performance but maybe all the bits of
your browser didn't make it to where they needed to be. You might
want to look at doing a vanilla install and see how the browser
runs. The kernel won't be precisely optimized for your hardware but
if the browser works who cares.
Oh well, my honey do list ain't gettin' any shorter. Good luck.
