[ale] PSC 1350 and ptal

I have been halfway succesful in getting the hp psc1350 to work on
redhat and suse ( kernel 2.40.20) with
hpoj-0.91. That is,  the scanner works ok, but the printer part  refuses
to work, does nor even seem connected.
Rerunning "/ptal-init setup" as suggested on some FAQ- like
interchanges, does not work.
Bypassing the spooler with "cat > <filename>  /dev/usb/lp0" does
nothing, although the driver is "raw", that is
no driver. Same thing with the "hpijs" driver.
Could this be a "cups" issue? I am probably missing something obvious.
Can somebody help me out or point
me in the right direction. TIA. Cor van Dijk.
