You might also check out freecycle.org.
They are local mailing lists of people who want to give away what they
normally would toss in the landfill. Someone posts on the list that they
have something to give away. The person who could use it privately
contacts the poster and they arrange the exchange. They want to recycle
stuff that is still useful to someone. The main rules are that it must be
totally free (no barter, no cash, etc), and it must be something that
would go in the landfill (no pets/animals, etc). They have a very active
Atlanta mailing list.
