I finally solved the paper tray selection problem where the selected
paper tray would not be retained after saving the printer configuration.
What fixed the problem was selecting a different PPD file rather than
the default one for the LJ 4200. When I used the HP Laserjet 4200
Foomatic/Postscript PPD rather than the "HP LJ 4200
(manufacturer-PPD...)"  PPD the paper try selection worked fine.
