[ale] Debian 3.0 as a server platform?

He evidently doesn't know how the Debian system works. Bugs are fixed
and they are fixed quickly. They have a team dedicated to fixing
security issues with the distribution; that is their sole function.

If there is some package that you want to use but it doesn't have the
feature you want in the stable branch then you can either a) use a
backport from backports.org or b) build it yourself. There are four
packages that I do this with: Apache 2.0, PHP 4, MySQL 4, and awstats.
I build the first three from source because I don't like the way they
are packaged in ANY distribution's repository and I use a backport for
awstats. Each of the three that I build from scratch takes about five
minutes to download, build, and install. The base Debian system chugs
along blissfully unaware that I am using software that isn't in it's
apt repository. I know of no base packages that provide extra
functionality in newer versions that are causing any hardships for me.
