I want to thank everyone for there help. The problem turned out that the
firewall indeed was active on the RH9 box. I did not realize that that was
set up for my by default.

As for using ssh instead of telnet... We wanted to understand how to use
LINUX in a windows environment before adding a layer of security such as
SSH.

Once we feel comfortable with telnet, we plan on moving on to SSH.
