Since you noted that a much earlier box got rooted, you arelikely
thinking about how to prevent that again on a new mail server machine.

Since you are familiar with the RedHat setups and management scheme,
your best bet would most likely be the new Fedora Core 3. It will use
SELinux out of the box which adds a good set of internal security
standards that prevent damage from breakin attempts. Fedora uses
familiar rpm tools. Qmail is not installed by Fedora (yet). The default
MTA is sendmail and postfix is the alternate.

Play with other distros on a spare machine but install for production an
environment you are familiar with.

If someone is footing the bill, RHEL3 is quite nice and solid.
