The Debian Installer project[0] has made installation on Debian markedly
better.  If you haven't tried it, check it out.  I boot from a CD and
walk through a setup that will configure regular ethernet, wireless, or
even PPP and let me pull down what I want from there, including
automated bootloader installation.
