[ale] Do I need a patch cable?

Yes, i would recommend you get a four-port switch for only $15 at Office 
Depot or other local computer discounter.

You could do a crossover cable straight into Smoothwall from your other 
PC, but if you ever forgot about it and replaced it with a normal patch 
cable, you'd be no working again.
