Also, I should mention that I am using grub as a boot loader.  I
remember when I used lilo there needed to be an entry in lilo.conf for
the ide-scsi emulation to work for the drive (hd?=ide-scsi).  Does the
same need to be done for grub?

Here's my /etc/grub.conf:

linux:/home/trey # cat /etc/grub.conf
root (hd0,0)
install --stage2=/boot/grub/stage2 /grub/stage1 d (hd0) /grub/stage2
0x8000 (hd0,0)/grub/menu.lst
quit
