[ale] Debian 2.6.8/Plextor dvd help please

A friend here at work had similar problems under same kernel version.
I can not remember what distro it was.
Updated kernel and "voila", it started working ;o)

Have you tried a recent "Knoppix-like" live CD to test it?

I had a problem once where I had an IDE card (pci) and plugged my DVD
writer to it. The Bios was ok with it but linux, Mandrake 10,  did not 
like it at all.

Changed things around and installed DVD as a single device, master,
directly to motherboard and it was happy burning to me afterwards :o)
