[ale] Tools for writing docbook?

Hey all,

I was happily perusing a handbook written in docbook, then took a look at the
file behind it. I was considering updating the manual, but have zero skills
in docbook - other than simply looking at a docbook file and seeing where
some changes would be required. Unfortunately, I'm more of a word processor
user, and not so much of a raw file editor type of person.

So - are there any tools that simplify editing and writing a docbook and that
show you what the finished product would look like? Or do you manually edit
the raw file, keeping a reference of docbook formatting commands (kind of
like editing html in a text editor?). I'd like to help a project, but don't
want to bite off more than I can chew.

Also, any recommendations on books for technical writing I could pick up from
the library? I was an English Lit major with a Philosophy minor for 3.5 years
before changing to a CompSci major - so would like to combine those skills if
at all possible.
Bruce
