[ale] Strange hangs with Mandrake 9.2 & GNOME

I'll look for that.  I don't recall any such problems before upgrading to 9.1 
from 9.1.  I deliberately picked a supported card, but maybe something 
changed.

I didn't look at the values coming from ifconfig.  I'll try that tonight.
