Knoppix also worked great on an older laptop I got off e-bay. I used it to figure out problems I was having with Mandrake 9.1 and SuSE Personal 8.2. It definately belongs in the tool kit (Knoppix 3.3 for 09-22-03 worked really well. I had problems with Knoppix 3.2 on my wife's HP laptop).
