Seagate had some problems with some controller hardware on the 30G for a
while. They also had a platter issue with one batch of 10G before that.
I have a personal pref for the cheetah series in either IDE or SCSI.
That has been very reliable. Both WD and Seagate make a consumer series
that is not very good. I think they do the quality tests and what fails
gets the cheap label and what passes is called a cheetah or barracuda.
I'm pretty sure the motherboard makers do this as well for the bulk
purchases they make for Dell, HP, etc. The ones that pass the tightest
specs _they_ sell with their label. The rest they farm out by the
truckload to OEM's.
Thus speaketh Jim, the jaded one of hardware headaches.
