[ale] How was the NW meeting last night?

Matthew Macumber gave a very good talk explaining Gentoo. The benefits
over other distros were pointed out plus the caveats. Certainly, anyone
who wants to stay with a constantly updated system of the newest
versions of software would be well advised to use Gentoo. Those who
haven't compiled a kernel or aren't familiar with compilation techniques
should have help and have read the docs beforehand. Next meeting will
also be exciting as it is about how to setup and run LDAP with a live
multi machine demo.

I really like good hardware support in the kernel and also like having
the latest software. That has been my main reason for using SuSE.
Secondary was having lot's of sysadmin taken care of by SuSE and not
me. Gentoo's offering of so many possible kernels, plus the absolute
latest software and patches continually updated weekly is really
appealing to me. I can probably enjoy working my way thru the sysadmin
setup of the configuration files to tweak the system like I want it. I
think at heart I've wanted a Debian like system and Gentoo fits the
bill. I plan to build my system around Gentoo and post on the list how
it goes. SuSE 8.2 comes with OO 1.02 and to add OO 1.03.1 to it is a
major pain unless you just ignore the OO 1.02 and install OO 1.03.1 in
/usr/local. I am tired of that!

I will soon trade up from a SGI O2 to a Dell Linux workstation running
protein modelling programs at work. I'll be going from a MIPs R5000 at
200MHz to a Intel P4 at 2.08GHz. My OpenGL speeds will increase by two
orders of magnitude by moving from SGI CRM graphics to the Nvidia FX1000
graphics. So, that is about 7-9 years of graphics engine development
time too, since the O2's graphics went on the market about 1996.

Just rambling but I did enjoy the meeting. It was the shortest meeting
we've had ending about 9:15pm and everyone was gone by 10pm! I actually
got home before midnight!
