[ale] wierd pppd problem

I spent much of the weekend trying to resolve a pppd issue. I've got my
box set up to support incoming dial in via pppd. It works fine for my
mother-in-law to dial in from her house. I was attempting to configure
a new box (upgrade) for her and testing dial in from here before
replacing the other box. Wierd thing is, when I set logging LOUD
enough, I get some bizarre results. In the mgetty log file, where
mgetty is looking for AutoPPP so as to initiate pppd connectivity, there
is the following:

07/14 17:21:38 yS1   getlogname (AUTO_PPP), read:Plugin passwordfd.so
loaded.[0d]
07/14 17:21:38 yS1 input finished with '\r', setting ICRNL ONLCR
07/14 17:21:38 yS1 tio_get_rs232_lines: status: RTS CTS DSR DTR DCD
07/14 17:21:38 yS1   match: user='Plugin passwordfd.so loaded.', key=''
07/14 17:21:38 yS1   match: user='Plugin passwordfd.so loaded.', key=''
07/14 17:21:38 yS1   match: user='Plugin passwordfd.so loaded.',
key='/AutoPPP/'07/14 17:21:38 yS1   match: user='Plugin passwordfd.so
loaded.', key=''
07/14 17:21:38 yS1   match: user='Plugin passwordfd.so loaded.', key=''
07/14 17:21:38 yS1   match: user='Plugin passwordfd.so loaded.',
key='*'*** hit!

Point is, what is being passed to the server from the client as the user
id is logging info from the client????

Anyone have any clues? Both boxes are SuSE 8.2

The latest, most widespread virus? Microsoft end user agreement.
Think about it...
