This is more of a holy war than anything else. When I need to deploy low
cost hosting solutions, I usually look to RedHat. They have good
documentation, and there are a variety of place to find support.

I like to build from scratch. I like to decide what goes into my binaries.
Most of the distros use a best guess, but they don't know your
requirements, so they toss everything in to be safe.

I am running 3.2.54a. I haven't had any issues so far. I would be careful
which version you use. A number of volnerabilities were recently fixed in
the mysql code base.

I always use the latest revs of mod PHP/mod Perl. I highly recommend you
create a sandbox to test new software before migrating to production.
