Wanted to note that I've had similar problems other folks have reported
regarding problems with installs of various distros. I've got a couple
of older cdrom drives laying around that I use to install on machines
that won't have a drive in them. They are old 2x, 4x, 8x to be exact.
now here's the deal. I did two installs yesterday with a 22x drive.
All went fine. I did a 3rd install with that drive and received an
non-descript error (something like 'error during install, ok'). I tried
a couple of variations of the install. Swapped the drive out for a 4x.
This time I received an error in the gui of SuSE 8.1, where it
normally lists the default software install, it said it couldn't locate
any packages. I then replaced the 4x with the 8x drive. The install
went with out a burp. Wierd.
My point is, cdrom drives are picky at times. Particularily if you're
using something you've burned. I know that older drives won't even
read cdrw's at all.
So, for those of you who have had recent problems, try a different
drive, or at least pick up the cheap drive cleaner and give it a spin
(LPAW). The one I bought works for cdrom and dvd drives. It has a
little brush actually mounted on the disk. I've not had any problems
when I've used it.
Good luck folks.
