[ale] virtual consoles

Making progress, but still stumped.

I've noted that there is a setting for gdm in /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf for 
the virtual console to start at.  I've changed it and can get gdm to 
start on vt3.

Still can't seem to locate where regular X gets this value.  If I start 
X by simply executing 'X' I still get it on vt7.
