[ale] Serial -> Infrared

Does anyone use serial to infrared converters.  I need to convert some
old serial interfaces on some CNC machines to infrared so I can talk via
a Palm Pilot.  

I see some on ebay but it seems they may require drivers?  I'm hoping
for a platform independent solution.
