[ale] /etc/passwd-, /etc/group-, etc....

Close enough. They are the original passwd, et al. files save after a
conversion using shadow password conversion program. passwd- and group-
are saved/created by pwconv and grpconv. shadow- gshadow- are made by
their converse apps, pwunconv and grpunconv. It makes it easy to back
and forth between the two version of password.

If you know you will never be switching back from shadow passwords, and
I can't come up with a reason to do so, then deleting the *- files above
is OK.
